BR 2-10: More Macdonalds (Strong, 2001)

"I have something important to say," (Strong, p.2, 22)

The story is that Macdonald's family has some news. As the father gave one of them, the twins started to argue. One day, a hamster they had generated noise at night and gave birth. This news made the family surprised and happy. Also, it made Mouse, one of the twins, change his mind to give place to another twin. The sentence above is used twice when one of the family members tell news.

What I found interesting is that the author  implied that the hamster would give birth soon before she did. To paraphrase, "you are getting very fat, young man," "I think you should go on a diet." (Strong, p.10) The mother didn't know the hamster was an female at that time. That's why she also didn't know the pet was pregnant. It was interesting.

Essay 2-03b: Convenient ways to learn with computers

Nowadays, it's necessary for everyone to have a computer and its skills. As to students, they often use ones for their assignments. Officers use ones for work. Thanks to computers, they can lead useful lives. There are a great number of ways to use the machinery. Here are the examples.

The students who major in English at KGU have to buy 'English Central' for doing their homework. The application is one of the best ways to learn English because when they use it, the language approaches them from different directions such as listening, typing vocabulary and speaking. Also, there are a variety of fields so that they can study many realms of English. First, students watch short videos spoken in English and see each sentence. If they find any words or phrases that they don't know, they click them and the application teaches them the meanings and the pronunciations. Next, they practice typing them to memorize the spellings. Then, they speak some important sentences with a microphones and it tells them the scores of speaking.

Besides, computers are treasury of knowledge. When students have to write a report, they can search for articles on the Internet. It shortens time to look for books in the library. If people use the same way, they can solve most problems or questions. For example, 'Yahoo Chiebukuro (知恵袋) ' is one of the good websites. When they don't know which disease they caught, they can ask "What is the name of the disease that ~?" Then, the experts answer the question.

By the way, how many dictionaries do people usually have? There are many kinds but more specifically the dictionary is written, heavier and thicker it is. If they have a computer, there are countless dictionaries so they don't have to carry such annoying stuff. Moreover, can anyone calculate quickly and precisely? In fact, computers are the fastest and most accurate calculator. The most famous software for calculation is 'Excel', literally superiority.

Aside from this, the most accessible way to use computers is contacting with someone. Getting in touch with SNS makes it possible to learn information easier. Students can submit assignments even on the Internet. Also for many officers, they can hold meetings on Skype.

However, copyright protection and learning the accurate methods of operation are essential for all computer users. Otherwise many pieces of information are leaked or computers may not work normally.

Finally, computers had realized globalization. It means that people having computers all over the world can learn what happens in other places promptly on the Internet. Because of these reasons, computers can permit modern people to learn a variety of things effectively.

BR 2-09: Thomas Edison (#, 2005)

'In his lifetime he was granted 1093 patents, the largest number ever given to one person.' (#, p. 25)

This book shows us Thomas Edison's life. He has been one of the greatest scientists in the world. He didn't stop working and as a result of his effort, he accomplished a remarkable feat. Since he was a child, he didn't stop wondering why the things were happening. He tried to learn many things.

I was impressed by his efforts and achievements. For example, since he was still young, he had experimented so many times and dropped into the library everyday to read a foot of books. Also, he frequently helped out someone in difficulties.

BR 2-08: Dog in School (Strong, 2000)

"Oh no! He isn't called Mystery. His name is Trouble!" (Strong, 2000, p.24)

This is a simple, but funny story. One day, a dog followed a girl who was going to school and the dog made the school reckless and wild. The sentences on the top were when the dog was sent to the owner. The girl named the dog Mystery and it was wrong. However, his real name was Trouble. Although it was different from the genuine one, I could understand why the owner called his name Trouble.

Comments for other students in Speaking 4

last week

I saw Akino's, Mayu's, Siena's, Miri's, Momoka's and Shunro's presentations.

First, I saw Akino's presentation after 3rd period at building No. 4. last Monday. She was talking about the same theme as me, 'baked Alaska'. Although I saw some similar contents to me, she told me about the different origin and I got interested in the variation of the sweets! However, I found that she wrote about the ingredients twice. I think it's a waste of time and spaces.

I saw Mayu's one at the same time. She told us about 'Mules'. Actually they are not dishes but ingredients. Her presentation was really organized so I could understand easily. However, she needs to speak louder than usual.

Next, I watched Seina's presentation last Tuesday during the lunch time at the library.
She talked about 'Tom yum goong'. I didn't know what it was at first but I learned it. Also, it seemed that her presentation was well-prepared. However, There were too small letters so it was hard to read them when we saw the presentation.

Boillabaisse was presented by Miri after 3rd period last Thursday at the bakery. I didn't know this dish too but it looked so yummy. I like the 4th slide because it was specifically remarked about its history. However there were a few slides that any pictures weren't  attached.

Momoka's was talking about 'Vienna Schnitzel' on the same day as Miri in 4th period at building No. 12. The dish really seemed like Tonkatsu, a kind of Japanese food. She searched for the dish from various fields! What I concerned about most was that she only had 7 or 8 slides.

I saw Shunro's presentation last Friday after 4th period at 1232. He talked about 'Huevos rancheros'. His good point was that he mentioned about his opinion finally. However he wrote so many words that it took a long time to read all of them and he was lack of a few slides too.

Anyway, all cuisines looked very delicious, so I'd like to cook and eat them.

this week

I saw Yosuke's, Karin's, Hayato's, Yuka's, Taiki's and Erika's presentations from last Friday to today.

First, Karin presented about 'Churrascaria' after 4th period last Friday at 1232. Her presentation attracted me very much because She chose nice pictures! However she stopped attaching photos from 7th or 8th slides.

I saw Yousuke's presentation after Karin. He told me about 'Fish and Chips' at 1232. I think many people know the British food and they think the taste bad. That's why he showed me the reasons. That was interesting. Although the topic was Fish and Chips, I think he mentioned about UK too much.

Hayato was talking about 'Pavlova' during 2nd period today at the library. The sweet seemed so yummy that I'd love to eat it someday. Since he added some Japanese words next to the difficult English words, it was easier to understand. On the other hand, he wrote some sentences on the pictures, so it was hard to read them.

I saw Yuka's presentation during lunchtime today at the bakery. She mentioned about 'Turducken'. The origin of the word was imaginable and interesting. She found a special Turducken on the website and showed me. It looked so nice. However she needed more pictures, I think.

Borsch was presented by Taiki during lunchtime at the bakery too. He used so many references that he could assemble conclusive data. However, it seemed to me that he made the last two slides without efforts.

Finally, Erika talked about 'Loco Moco' now, in 3rd period today at the library. Her background was really pretty and her slides were well-organized. I didn't know that it was a Hawaiian dish. However, she gave a presentation for a short time.

BR 2-07: Anne Frank (Heinle,2002)

"I don't want to know who did it." (Heinle, 2002, p.29)

Anne Frank, a 13-year-old Jewish girl, led a miserable life in the 1940s. She wrote a diary and even now it's well-read by people around the world. Her father, Otto Frank survived in WWⅡ and took over it. Thousands of Jewish people were killed at the concentration camps and we can't imagine their lives because it's very peaceful in Japan now. If we had to undergo such a life, we would die earlier than those who lived in those days.

I have two things I like in this book. One is that Anne didn't give up her life even though she was endangered and kept her diary. She seemed so brave that I'd like to behave like her when I get into trouble. Also, I like what her father said after the war. When many people asked him that who told the Nazis about the Annex, he always answered the sentence on the top. I think he wanted to crave peace over the world rather than to blame the fact.

Here's the detail of her: http://www.annefrank.org/

Comments for friends' presentation in Speaking 4

To Taiki (City Presentation)
I saw Taiki's presentation in Speaking class today at 1242. His good point is that he has many trivia of Thai and Bangkok. On the other hand, his voice is a little small and vague, so I want him to make a presentation louder and more clearly next time.

To Takahiro (Food Presentation)
I saw Takahiro's food presentation last Friday after 4th period at the library. He was talking about Souvlaki, a kind of Greek dishes. His presentation was so detailed and he told us about what we really wanted to know. In addition, he compared the food with a similar Japanese one so that we could imagine easily. However, there were too many small letters in his presentation and it was hard for us to read.

By the way, I have a suggestion. Each student evaluates the other students and you tell the evaluator about the bad points in gmail, but the presenters can't know their own bad points. For this reason, how about tell them about his or her weak points in some way or another?

BR 2-06: Gulliver's Travels in Lilliput(Swift, 2008)

'He goes to Blefuscu and looks for new adventures there.' (Swift, 2008, p. #)

When I took the History of English Literature, I learned about this original story and him, Jonathan Swift, so I chose this book today. This is the story that a ship's doctor, Lemuel Gulliver, went missing in a heavy storm one day and arrived at the island in which very little people lived, Lilliput. He saved there from the Blefuscu's attack, but there were some people who sought the life of him. Finally he left there and went to Blefuscu. Here's the last sentence on the top.

I like his final action in this book. He went to the island where he attacked. Although I have never read the whole story of Gulliver's Travels, I want to read it someday. Have you ever heard Lilliput, the island where little people live? I know there are a lot of stories that little or big people appear in ordinary people's world, for example, One Piece, one of the famous comics in Japan. However, I think many authors these days copy such a Swift's idea.

Essay 2-02b: Tracing the History of Exile

Exile has been one of the most famous male groups in Japan for more than a decade, so any Japanese people should know the group regardless of their interests. It has four periods and has changed the forms many times. Each period has its unique characteristics such as the number of members and themes of the songs. Now, let's trace the history of Exile.

In 2001, Exile came into being. Atsushi and Shun joined it as new vocals. Hero, Matsu, Usa and Makidai had already set up a dance group. The name of their first single CD is "Your eyes only ~Aimaina Bokuno Rinkaku (My Vague Outline)~". Two years later, they released the second album called "Styles of Beyond" and won the first place of albus chart for the first time. 'Song for you' was so popular among those who loved Shun. In that year, they also appeared on Kohaku Utagassen, a famous TV program broadcasted in every December 31 first time ever and sang 'Choo Choo Train', cover of Zoo's song. They tracked the song in front of State of Liberty in New York. The dance in the intro is so famous that many people should have copied it.

In 2004, they launched the 15th single CD called "real world" and at last won the first place of single chart for the first time. The song was used on the TV show of professional baseball league. The next year, they released the best album, "Perfect Best" and it passed the one million mark. It's consisted in two CDs and a DVD; most single songs are put in the first CD, other songs are put in the second one, and most promotion videos are put in the DVD. Though they were going so strong, Shun regrettably dropped out of the group because of his eye's hurt and starting his solo work in 2006. They appeared on Music Station and sang a new song, 'Yes!' and their first single song as the final stage.

From 2006, Akira of Rather Unique joined Exile and 2nd period of its group started. He is a dancer, and had succeeded in a dance club those days. When Makidai and Matsu, who have been early members, went to a club, they saw Akira by chance and they took an action to speak to Akira. Then he became a member of Exile and started flourishing as its dance performer. Also, "Exile Vocal Battle Audition ~Asian Dream~" took place at Nippon Budokan in the same year. This was an audition to decide an main vocal of the group. About ten thousand people joined it and of course, Takahiro, joined it too. The winner of the audition was he and now he is still a member of its present vocal. His skill as a singer, his character, his looks and his nice figure were evaluated. Middle years of Exile started in 2006, so that year was thought to be an important one for Exile and a lot of fan.

In the next year, they released the 23rd single CD named "Michi (Road)". This is a kind of graduation song, and very famous for many students, so it's often used for graduation ceremonies. In addition, it ranked the top of new songs. In the same year, Exile played a live show whose name is "Exile Evolution ~Summer Time Love~". It was the first show seven members, so a lot of people came and enjoyed it. Okaxile appeared in their live for the first time. Okaxile means an collaboration of Exile and Takashi Okamura, a popular comedian and belongs to Ninety Nine. It is a name of a comedian group which has its own TV program called Mechaike. In December, Exile released the 6th album whose name was "Exile Love" and ranked the first place.

They held a tour at Tokyo Dome for the first time in 2008. Its name is "Exile Perfect Live 2008". Whereas it was a trigger to start dome tours, it was the final live show with seven members. After that they released the 28th single CD, "Ti Amo". It 's a sort of love song and many people love it. It got the 50th Japan Record Award and it was the first time ever for them.  In the next year, they got their own TV program called "Exile Generation". It was so familiar to their fans. Exile's middle years became a very important year.

In 2009, Kenchi, Keiji, Tetsuya, Nesmith, Shokichi, Naoto and Naoki joined to Exile from Second J Seoul Brothers and late years of it drew a curtain. In that year, Exile got the Japan Record Awards again for the 30th single CD, "Someday". Also, the Nation Festival to celebrate His Majesty the Emperor enthronement of twenty years was held and they celebrated to offer the celebration music, "Taiyono Kuni (Nation of the Sun)". In the next year, they held the first stadium tour called "Fantasy" and it mobilized about 1.1 million people. They got third round of Japan Record Awards for the 35th single CD, "I Wish for You" in that year.

In 2011, they released the 37th single CD, "Rising Sun ~Itsuka Kitto... (Hopefully Someday...)" as the 10th anniversary memorial and reconstruction support song for Great East Japan Earthquake. In 2012, they released the album, "Exile Japan/ Solo" which won the first of ranking and it made the first place consecutive for ten years. The record had been the first of all male group artists. Moreover this album got a top of ranking for three weeks straight, what's more this record was also the first for them.

In 2013, "Exile Pride ~Konna Sekaiwo Aisurutame (For Loving such World)~" was released and it recorded a million sales as a single for the first time. This song also got the Japan Record Awards. The announcement that recruiting of a new performer was published and the title was " Exile Performer Battle Audition". They performed on NHK year-end grand song festival, Kohaku Utagassen that year and that stage was the final stage for Hiro, the leader of Exile. He announced he had a plan to retire its performer by this April. Finally this third period ended as Hiro retired performer. They did five tours, released fourteen singles, and released five live DVDs during it.

Now Exile restarted with some new members and is coming up big this year. Their appeal for singing and dancing will have been popular without any interruption.

BR 2-04: Persuasion(Austen, 1818)

'Captain Wentworth was there, at a desk in one corner of the room, writing a letter.'

This book is a story of love and marriage.  Anne Elliott and Captain Wentworth were in love when they were young, but their marriage was not accepted by people around them. Although she thought he forgot her, he didn't. Then they meet again many years later and they are still in love!

Jane Autsen is one of the most important of all English writers. Her books are mostly about men and young women and love. "Sense and Sensibility" and "Pride and Prejudice" are the most famous books of hers, but I got interested in this book because it was the final publication for her. I wrote a report about this in the class of History of English Literature, so I researched a lot about its characters.

The heroine, Anne is a very quiet and clever woman. She chose her partner for non-related to honor and status. One the other hand, women around her all want to marry someone rich, for they have their only way to be rich and gain a better status. I think the reason of the tendency is that women those days in England hadn't had such an important social role and it was male-centered society. I like Anne's thinking.

BR 2-03: Wonders of the World(Ashley, 2003)

'Can you find these Wonders of the World on the world map?'

This book tells us about the biggest, highest, largest, or deepest places in the world. I had already known some of them, such as the highest mountain, Mt Everest in Nepal and the biggest coral reef, the Great Barrier Reef in Australia. However, I learned the largest glacier, The Lambert Glacier in Antarctica, the deepest cave, the Jean Bernard Cave in France, and the highest waterfall, the Angel Falls in Venezuela. All of them attracts me so much! If I have enough money and time, I'd like to travel all over the world and visit all the places that are written on this book.

When I was in high school and studied world history, I learned a phrase. It is 'the result of Nile'. Although it's hard to understand only the phrase, this book explains the meaning. It means that most of the food in Egypt is grown near the River Nile because of so much rain and flood.
